The Cancer Game Team @ Folding@Home
Use your computer's spare time to help research the cure to diseases.
As many of you may know, I battled Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a form of cancer, when I was a teenager. I had extensive
chemotherapy, some radiation therapy, and a bone marrow transplant to help cure me of the disease. I am now cancer-free over eleven years.
I grew up playing computer games, it was always a passion for me. While I was in college, I co-developed The Cancer Game, a fun, short video game intended to help cancer patients visualize their bodies destroying cancer.
It was a very successful project, it helped me grow academically and was one of my main dreams in life: to create a video game.
Computers have just got faster and faster over the years. Often times, we just use them for simple tasks, like
checking e-mail, messaging friends, surfing the web, typing documents. Rarely do these tasks use up our full
computer's speed, yet we have our computer own, spending maybe 10% of its "brain" doing our tasks. What if we could
use the other 90% of its "brain" to help find the cure to more cancers and other serious diseases that plague humanity,
affecting us personally and affecting our family and friends? What if running a screensaver brought a cure just one
day closer?
Obviously, the details are much more complicated than this. But the concept is perfect: Our computers often have
extra processing power than we use, and we can "donate" that time to a project that is used to speed along scientific
research. You don't need to be a scientist or a doctor to participate, just download an application called Folding@Home
from Stanford onto your computer. Installing this package will allow your computer to use its spare time to speed
up research for the cure for many diseases.
